Dad details nightmare family meal in Fresno as homeless man freaks out

A Fresno father says what should have been an ordinary night out with his family turned into a disturbing experience when a man behaving erratically appeared outside the restaurant where they were eating.
The incident, which the father recorded on video, shows his young son calmly eating pasta while a shirtless man outside waves his arms, talks to himself, and moves around unpredictably near the restaurant.

After posting the video on social media, the father criticized local and state leaders, saying their policies have allowed situations like this to become common. He specifically called out Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing them of misusing taxpayer money while allowing homelessness to grow. In his post, he wrote that he refuses to accept such scenes as normal for his child to witness.
Data from the 2024 Point-in-Time count shows that 4,305 people were experiencing homelessness across Fresno and Madera counties. According to the report, 61 percent of those individuals were living without shelter, meaning they were staying on streets, in vehicles, or in other outdoor locations.

The father also criticized housing-first approaches to homelessness, arguing that providing housing without addressing substance abuse or requiring accountability for criminal behavior does not solve the problem. He said the man’s behavior appeared to be tied to serious addiction and mental health issues, and argued that simply giving someone housing while those problems remain untreated does little to help them.
The video quickly spread online and sparked widespread debate about how California handles homelessness and whether families feel safe in certain areas.
Welcome to dinner in @MayorJerryDyer One Fresno. Him and his partner @GavinNewsom have worked really hard wasting tax dollars and normalizing this with their policies. I purposely don’t dine with my family in many parts of Fresno because this is the norm. Jerry and Gavin enable… pic.twitter.com/urVGtebhvQ

For the Fresno father, the experience left a lasting impression. He said he hopes people struggling with addiction receive the firm intervention they need to become sober.
