A shipment of chocolate meant for Easter shoppers in Europe has disappeared, leaving Nestlé and authorities searching for answers. The company says a full truck carrying its new KitKat bars went missing while traveling from a factory in central Italy to a distribution center in Poland.
According to Nestlé, the truck was loaded with roughly 12 tons of chocolate—about 413,793 KitKat bars. The company said Friday that neither the truck nor the cargo has been located. Nestlé stated it is working with law enforcement and logistics partners to try to trace where the shipment went.
The missing delivery could create shortages in stores just as demand rises ahead of the Easter holiday. Nestlé also warned that the stolen candy might end up being sold through unauthorized sellers.
The chocolate bars were supposed to be distributed to retailers across Europe. Each bar includes a batch code that can be scanned. If a code is identified as part of the stolen shipment, the system will provide instructions on how to report it to KitKat, which says the information will then be passed on to authorities.
While the situation has drawn some lighthearted comments, the company says the issue itself is serious. In a statement, KitKat acknowledged the thieves may have “excellent taste,” but emphasized that cargo theft is a growing problem affecting businesses of all sizes.
