The iconic F-14 fighter jet, known worldwide from Top Gun, may have reached the end of its operational life due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Reports from NPR and The War Zone suggest that Israeli airstrikes could have destroyed the last functioning F-14s. Satellite images reveal several Tomcats in ruins at an Iranian airbase, though analysts caution that confirming whether any survived will take time.

If the destruction is total, it marks the conclusion of a decades-long chapter in aviation history. The F-14 first entered Iran in the 1970s, sold by Washington to a US ally. Just a few years later, following the overthrow of the shah, the aircraft became part of the arsenal of a government that opposed the United States.

US Navy Commander Ward Carroll, who spent much of his career flying Tomcats and now studies satellite imagery, told NPR, “While I understand the tactical necessity of taking them out … I’m also filled with sadness at their demise.” The United States retired its F-14s in 2006, leaving Iran as the last operator of the jet. Estimates of how many remained operational ranged from just a few to around 25, according to The War Zone. Over the years, Iran maintained its fleet through what NPR describes as a “long-running spare parts smuggling ring.”
