Top Exorcists Ask Pope Leo To Increase Number and Training of Specialized Priests To Combat Surge in Occultism and Satanic Practices
A growing concern within the Catholic Church has prompted its top exorcists to appeal directly to Pope Leo XIV for stronger support in addressing occult activity worldwide.
Representatives from the International Association of Exorcists (AIE) met with the Pope on Friday, March 13, to present a report documenting a rise in cases connected to occultism, Satanism, and esoteric practices. The report highlighted not only the increase in such incidents but also their profound spiritual impact on the faithful.
During the private audience, the AIE urged Pope Leo XIV to ensure that every diocese around the globe has at least one well-trained exorcist priest. They emphasized that proper preparation is as important as numbers, including seminary training, specialized programs for new bishops, and clear guidelines for handling delicate pastoral situations.

Father Francesco Bamonte, Vice President of the AIE, stressed that ignoring these phenomena leaves many Catholics without adequate guidance, sometimes leading them to harmful or misguided solutions. He noted the importance of careful, Gospel-centered pastoral care in responding to these challenges.
In addition to the report, the Pope received a copy of the book Guidelines for the Ministry of Exorcism and a metal image of Saint Michael the Archangel from the sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo. During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV also reflected on his past acquaintance with Father Gabriele Amorth, the founder of the AIE, expressing his appreciation for Amorth’s work.
The exchange concluded with Monsignor Orlita and Father Bamonte presenting the Pope with the Saint Michael image and copies of the exorcism guidebook in both Italian and English. In return, the Pope gave the visitors a rosary as a gesture of closeness and encouragement before bidding them farewell.
