A Tennessee man has been charged after authorities say a woman was shot multiple times while trying to recover her daughter’s stolen car at a Memphis shopping center.

Marquis Byers, 23, is facing an aggravated assault charge in connection with the shooting, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime. He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $125,000 bond.

The incident happened Wednesday near the Charlestowne Shops shopping center on Mount Moriah Road Extension in Memphis, Tennessee. According to court documents reviewed by local CBS affiliate WREG, the woman was driving in the area when she spotted her daughter’s stolen 2011 Hyundai Sonata parked in the lot.

Authorities say the woman parked her own vehicle behind the Sonata to block anyone from driving it away. She then got inside the car, shut the door, and looked down as she attempted to open the hood.

At that moment, several gunshots rang out.

The woman was struck in both legs. After being shot, she looked up and saw two men getting into a black BMW, according to investigators.

She called 911, and Memphis police officers arrived shortly afterward. Officers applied two tourniquets to her legs to control the bleeding before she was transported to a nearby hospital. She was listed in non-critical condition.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the area and say it shows a man dressed in black — identified by police as Byers — getting out of the BMW, approaching the driver’s side of the Sonata, and firing several shots that struck the woman in the legs.

Authorities say a woman then got out of the BMW and confronted Byers. Another man picked up the gun that Byers allegedly dropped, and the two men left the scene.

The woman who exited the BMW reportedly stayed behind to help the victim after the shooting.

Police later connected the BMW to Byers and two other individuals. As of Thursday, the other two people had not been charged.

Byers was later arrested and booked into jail. He appeared in court this week, though it was not immediately clear when he is scheduled to appear again.
