A member of the French Navy unintentionally revealed the location of a major warship after recording a workout during deployment. According to reports from Le Monde cited by the Telegraph, a sailor aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle logged a 4.3-mile run on the ship’s deck on March 13. When his smartwatch later synced the workout to the Strava fitness app, the uploaded route effectively showed the carrier’s exact position in the eastern Mediterranean almost in real time.

The French carrier had recently been redirected from exercises in the North Atlantic and sent toward the Mediterranean as tensions between the United States and Iran increased earlier this month. The vessel, France’s flagship and the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier outside those operated by the U.S. military, had been deployed with escort ships following U.S.–Israeli strikes at the end of February. French President Emmanuel Macron had also visited the ship just four days before the sailor recorded the run.

Although it was already known that the roughly 42,000-ton carrier was operating somewhere in the region—and it is large enough to be seen in satellite imagery—the Strava activity revealed its precise location. The BBC described the situation as a risky lapse in judgment.

Le Monde has previously reported that publicly shared fitness data can expose sensitive military information. Past examples have included revealing patrol patterns of French nuclear submarines and showing the movements of security teams assigned to protect world leaders, including U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The episode comes as France and its allies have pledged to help protect commercial shipping in the region, including traffic moving through the Strait of Hormuz. A spokesperson for the French military said personnel are regularly warned about the risks of using mobile apps while on duty. The spokesperson added that command authorities are taking appropriate action in response to the incident.
