GoFundMe for Elderly DoorDash Driver Nears $1M
A simple coffee delivery in Tennessee has turned into a life-changing moment for a 78-year-old delivery driver and his wife.
Richard Pulley, who delivers for DoorDash in Manchester, Tennessee, recently brought a Starbucks order to local resident Brittany Smith. When Smith later reviewed the footage from her doorbell camera, she noticed that the driver appeared elderly and seemed to be having difficulty completing the delivery. Concerned, she shared the video on social media and asked others to help identify the man, questioning why someone his age needed to be working as a delivery driver.
People online quickly helped identify him as Richard Pulley. Smith soon learned that Pulley had returned to work after retiring because his wife, Brenda, had lost her job. With household bills and medication expenses piling up, he had started delivering food to help support them.
Moved by the situation, Smith launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the couple. In the fundraiser description, she explained that Pulley was not working because he wanted to, but because the couple needed the income. Her goal was to raise enough money to allow him to retire again and relieve the financial pressure they were facing.
The story spread rapidly across social media, and donations began pouring in from people across the country. By Friday morning, the fundraiser had already passed $500,000. The momentum continued through the weekend.
As of Monday morning, more than $925,000 had been donated to help Richard and Brenda Pulley. Smith said the public response has been overwhelming and hopes the funds will give the couple the financial stability they need so Richard no longer has to work delivery jobs in retirement.
