Iranian Regime Clerics Flee to Safe Harbor of Canada?

A video recorded at Toronto Pearson Airport has sparked renewed attention on the presence of Iranian regime figures and alleged Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) affiliates in Canada.

Footage circulating online shows an Iranian cleric identified as Hojjatoleslam Morteza Tayebi arriving at the airport while dressed in traditional clerical clothing and carrying a suitcase. Reports claim that Tayebi may hold Canadian residency or citizenship and travels between Iran and Canada.

The video has intensified an ongoing debate about the number of individuals connected to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps believed to be living in Canada. Some estimates suggest that more than 700 people associated with the IRGC, an organization linked to the Iranian government’s military and security operations, may reside in the country or hold dual citizenship.

Member of Parliament Melissa Lantsman has repeatedly raised concerns about the issue in recent years. She argues that the Canadian government is aware that individuals connected to the IRGC are present in the country but has not taken sufficient action to address it. According to Lantsman, these individuals are involved in intimidation and violence tied to the Iranian regime and operate within Canadian communities.

She has questioned why authorities continue to allow people linked to the organization to remain in Canada despite the security concerns.

The situation has also prompted questions about potential implications for the United States. Critics argue that if Iranian clerics or figures connected to the regime are able to travel freely or maintain safe residence in Canada while opposing U.S. interests, it could create broader regional security concerns.

Observers also note that the presence of IRGC members and Iranian clerics who hold Canadian citizenship or residency could help explain the relatively cautious response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney regarding the issue.
