Cyndi Lauper’s troubled son brags about K Louis Vuitton jacket as he learns his fate after finally admitting to gun charge

Declyn “Dex” Lauper, the 29-year-old son of pop icon Cyndi Lauper, drew attention in Manhattan Supreme Court on Friday—not for his music, but for a fashion statement. Sporting a baby blue Louis Vuitton “Embroidered Faces Varsity Jacket,” Lauper reportedly told onlookers it cost “10 Gs” as he passed through security for his court appearance.

Lauper, who has released four songs on SoundCloud, was in court to address charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. The charge stemmed from an incident on February 7, 2024, in Upper Manhattan, when police discovered a loaded Glock .47-caliber handgun on him following the shooting of a 24-year-old friend. He faced up to seven years in prison before agreeing to a plea deal.

Under the agreement, Lauper will serve one year of interim probation, complete substance abuse treatment, and maintain a clean record for the duration of the probation. Successfully fulfilling these conditions would allow him to plead to a reduced charge of criminal possession of a firearm and receive a three-year conditional discharge, according to Judge Sara Litman.

The high-end jacket, a collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, has a retail price around $6,800, though Lauper claimed it cost $10,000. At the courthouse, he gave a thumbs-up while wearing the wool-and-leather garment, which contrasts sharply with the seriousness of the legal proceedings.

This marks Lauper’s second conviction in Manhattan. He previously took a plea deal to avoid jail time for stealing a Mercedes outside a fellow rapper’s memorial in 2022. During the weapon incident, prosecutors say Lauper initially denied ownership of the gun but reportedly invoked his famous mother, asking officers to contact Cyndi Lauper and his life coach while trying to explain the situation.

Lauper’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, described the plea deal as a positive outcome for his client. “He’s a great creative mind and has a lot of things to do,” Tacopina said after the hearing. “This hanging over his head was a hindrance to that, and now he can focus on his music and future projects.”
