Tina Peters Found Not Guilty After Being Attacked by Inmate in Prison
Tina Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk, has been officially cleared of assault following an incident in a Colorado prison earlier this year. The Department of Corrections disciplinary board ruled that Peters was defending herself when she was attacked by another inmate in mid-January.
The altercation, which was captured on video and circulated widely, involved a 29-year-old prisoner who appeared to attempt to provoke Peters into a violent response. While unverified reports have suggested that the inmate was granted parole shortly after the incident, these claims have not been confirmed.

After reviewing the evidence, the Prison Board determined that Peters’ actions were justified.
“Today, reason and truth prevailed,” Peters said. “I was found not guilty. The Department of Corrections thoroughly examined the evidence and concluded that I acted in self-defense. I’m grateful the Board considered the facts carefully and was not influenced by media coverage.”
The case highlights ongoing concerns about Colorado’s prison system, particularly the challenges faced by individuals who maintain their innocence while incarcerated. Peters’ supporters view the ruling as a rare acknowledgment of fairness within the state’s judicial and correctional processes.
