Son stabbed his ‘childhood sweethearts’ parents to death after argument about household chores

A man from New Jersey has confessed to killing his parents with a kitchen knife and moving their bodies into a bedroom after a dispute over household chores.

Michael Mulgrew, 37, entered guilty pleas on Wednesday to two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, 71-year-old Eugene Mulgrew and 69-year-old Cheryl Mulgrew, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office reported. Prosecutors are requesting that he serve two consecutive 30-year sentences without the possibility of parole, with sentencing scheduled for this summer.

According to court documents, the night before the killings, Cheryl Mulgrew contacted both law enforcement and mental health services, seeking help for her son. By the time officials arrived at the family home on Lincoln Avenue in Barnegat Township to conduct an evaluation, Michael Mulgrew had already left.

Later that evening, Cheryl Mulgrew called authorities again, saying her son had returned and that they intended to see a doctor the next morning.

Tragically, the following day would end in the deaths of both parents. Around 11 a.m. on November 2, 2023, Barnegat Township police were dispatched to the home to assist medical personnel. Officers spotted a man walking away from the property as they arrived and noticed blood on the front door. Upon entering, they found blood throughout the house and discovered Eugene and Cheryl Mulgrew in a bedroom with stab wounds to their upper bodies, along with a knife nearby.

The man seen leaving the home was identified as Michael Mulgrew. He was taken into custody, and during interviews, he revealed that he had left the house the previous night because he feared for his own safety. He admitted that the next morning he attacked his parents with a kitchen knife during an argument about chores, then dragged their bodies into a bedroom, packed a bag, and left the residence.
