Can You Say Blasphemy? Jesus Christ! There’s a Hunky Jesus Documentary Coming, and the Trailer Has Risen

Fans of the Easter Sunday Hunky Jesus Contest will be thrilled to see there’s a new feature-length documentary, “Hunky Jesus,” now hitting the film festival circuit—and the trailer is already turning heads.

It’s early March, and Easter Sunday this year falls on April 6. That means there are just 32 shopping days left until this year’s Hunky Jesus Contest in Dolores Park, the annual event hosted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as part of their long-running celebration.

But there’s even bigger news: a brand-new feature-length documentary about the contest is on the way. “Hunky Jesus” will premiere as the opening night film at the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, meaning fans would currently have to travel all the way to London to see it during its screening dates in about two weeks.

Film festival season in San Francisco is just around the corner, however, and there’s a strong chance the documentary could appear in one of the city’s upcoming spring or summer festivals.

According to the official BFI Flare description, the film is described as “a riotous documentary” that follows the drag nuns of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as they push back against rising religious conservatism that they say threatens human rights. The documentary weaves together footage from the 2023 annual free festival for the queer community—with nods to groups like The Cockettes—alongside the Sisters’ history of activism during the AIDS crisis and some of their most famous direct actions, including a 1987 protest involving Pope John Paul II.

As seen in the trailer, the film features interviews with Sister Roma and founding sister Grand Mother Vish-Knew. It is narrated by George Takei and directed by Jennifer M. Kroot.

Kroot studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and previously directed the documentaries To Be Takei (2014) and The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin (2017).

For now, the “Hunky Jesus” documentary isn’t scheduled to screen in San Francisco and currently has no streaming release planned. At the moment, its only confirmed showings are at BFI Flare in London.

That said, both the SFFILM Festival and Frameline LGBTQ+ Film Festival have yet to announce their 2026 lineups.

So here’s hoping those festivals bring the “Hunky Jesus” documentary home to San Francisco audiences later this year..
