Far Left Democrats Really Want AOC to be Nominee for President in 2028

As discussion begins about the 2028 presidential election, some voices on the far left appear increasingly focused on one figure: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Many activists within that wing of the Democratic Party see her as their preferred candidate to lead the party’s presidential ticket.
That possibility hasn’t come out of nowhere. Ocasio-Cortez has spent months traveling across the country alongside Bernie Sanders, appearing at their “Fight Oligarchy” rallies. These events have been widely viewed as a platform that raises her national profile and positions her as a potential successor to Sanders’ political movement.
Within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, momentum appears to be building. Some activists believe recent victories by progressive candidates—such as Zohran Mamdani—signal that the political environment may be shifting in their favor and that now could be their moment to push a more openly democratic-socialist agenda.
According to reporting cited by Breitbart News, several hard-left Democrats are encouraging Ocasio-Cortez to consider a 2028 presidential campaign. Supporters believe she could step into the role long occupied by Sanders as the movement’s most visible national figure.

Behind the scenes, allies say a presidential run could significantly boost her national standing. Some believe she could quickly poll among the top Democratic contenders and potentially raise more than $100 million in campaign funds.
One political observer told Axios that recent progressive wins in places like New York City could signal an opportunity for a left-wing nominee that may not appear again for many years. These developments, they argue, could reshape the Democratic primary landscape.
Even if a presidential bid ultimately fell short, supporters say the campaign could still elevate issues they prioritize—such as universal health care—and expand Ocasio-Cortez’s influence within the party. Some strategists also speculate that such a run could position her for a future Senate campaign in New York, particularly if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer eventually retires or faces a primary challenge.

However, the idea of an Ocasio-Cortez presidential campaign could also deepen divisions within the Democratic Party. Moderates and progressives have already clashed over the party’s direction, especially during the presidency of Donald Trump.
If her recent international appearances—such as her speech in Munich—are any indication of how a national campaign might unfold, some Democrats may be weighing carefully whether this is the path they want the party to take.
