Creep nurse had sex with patient — then falsely accused him of sexually assaulting her
A Wisconsin nurse has been sentenced to prison after engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient in a drug court program and then falsely accusing him of sexual assault.
Melissa Knutson, who worked for the Monroe County Drug Court in 2022, was found guilty of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer. Prosecutors said she had sexual encounters with the patient while administering the substance abuse medication Vivitrol.
When authorities investigated, Knutson initially claimed the patient had sexually assaulted her. She said she had kept quiet about the alleged assault out of fear for her safety and that of her family.
However, text messages from the patient later showed that Knutson had initiated the relationship and planned to deny it if authorities discovered it. She eventually admitted to lying about the assault to avoid repercussions.
District Attorney Kevin Croninger said, “The harm caused by Ms. Knutson was deep and significant. She violated the sacred trust between a patient and a nurse and compounded that by falsely accusing the patient of sexual assault. This situation is particularly egregious because the patient was a participant in drug court.”
Knutson was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by two years of extended supervision.
