Subway employee shoots customer during fight, police say

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A Subway employee is facing a first-degree assault charge after police say he shot a customer during an argument.

Bags of chips and a rack lying on the floor and an upside-down chair paint the picture of the scene that unfolded the night of Feb. 26 shortly before 10 p.m.

Police say the incident happened after a customer got upset at an employee, 31-year-old Markeas Bernard.

It is unclear what started the argument. Investigators say the customer picked up a chair and other objects and began throwing them at Bernard.

Mobile police say they are reviewing footage from Thursday night’s shooting inside the Subway. A person with knowledge of what happened told FOX10 News the customer jumped over the counter, but MPD did not confirm that. Police say the two ended up at the front door, and that is when Bernard opened fire.

Authorities say Bernard stayed on the scene and was arrested.

MPD says the customer was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in stable condition. One other customer was inside the Subway during the shooting and was not injured.

Jail records show Bernard’s bond is set at $30,000. He’s scheduled to be in court March 3.
