After a six-year investigation, authorities have arrested two men in connection with the brutal 2019 murder of Fort Hood soldier Pvt. Gregory Wedel-Morales.

The assistant chief of the Killeen Police Department, Alex Gearhart, confirmed that Darion Lequan Brown, 27, and Darius Demarcus Nobles, 28, both with gang affiliations, were taken into custody and charged with Wedel-Morales’ murder.

Wedel-Morales was reported missing in August 2019. Ten months later, his remains were discovered in a Killeen, Texas field. An autopsy showed he had been shot in the head. Initial investigations produced no arrests, but new evidence from phone records eventually pointed investigators to the suspects.

According to the arrest affidavit, Brown and Nobles were instructed by their gang to “put in work” by killing Wedel-Morales. Investigators traced one of the last calls made to Wedel-Morales’ phone to a device previously reported stolen by Brown. Questioned by detectives, Brown admitted that he and Nobles were involved in the murder.

The arrests mark a major breakthrough in a Central Texas cold case that had remained unsolved for years.

Fort Hood has faced multiple high-profile cases of violence in recent years. In 2020, Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen was killed by Spc. Aaron Robinson. Her body was discovered after she had been missing for more than two months. Robinson later died by suicide, and his girlfriend, Cecily Aguilar, received a 30-year prison sentence for her role in covering up the crime. According to PBS, Fort Hood has one of the highest rates of murder and sexual assault among U.S. Army bases.
