President Trump raised a familiar name as a possible future Supreme Court nominee during a rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Friday: Sen. Ted Cruz.
At the event, the president praised the Texas Republican as “an amazing guy” and said he has considered nominating him to the high court, even though Cruz said in January that he was not interested in the position.
Trump also joked about Cruz’s reputation in the Senate, suggesting that lawmakers in both parties might eagerly support his confirmation. According to USA Today, the president quipped that Cruz would receive “100% of the Democrat vote, 100% of the Republican vote,” humorously describing him as “such a pain in the a–” while also calling him “so good and so talented.”
There are currently no vacancies on the Supreme Court.
Cruz’s potential alignment with the president on key issues remains an open question. President Trump has expressed frustration with the Supreme Court over a recent decision that struck down most of his tariffs. While Cruz told Fox Business last year that he is “not a fan of tariffs,” according to The Hill, he said in a CNBC interview last week that he believes the Court’s ruling on tariffs was incorrect.
