President Trump claimed Friday that his economic policies and a surging stock market helped improve the personal life of a New York City police officer whose wife had previously treated him poorly.
Speaking at a rally in Texas, Trump told the crowd that the officer had shared how his financial situation had transformed under the president’s policies. “This wonderful, tough policeman from New York — he’s taking good care of us — and he said, ‘Sir, it’s so good. My married life has gotten so much better,’” Trump said, quoting the officer.
Trump recounted the officer’s words: “My wife thought I was a loser financially. I couldn’t make any money because my 401(k) was dying for years. And now she thinks I’m the smartest financial genius ever. It’s made my sex life good… it’s given me a tremendous boost in life.”
The president framed the story in his familiar style, highlighting how rising stock values can change perceptions at home. “So this is a big, tough cop. He said, ‘My wife treated me like a dog, and now she admires my financial genius, and I haven’t done anything. My 401(k) has gone through the roof,’” Trump said.
He added: “So I said, ‘Thank you very much.’ But everybody’s there, right? Everybody’s up. Has anybody gone down with their 401(k)? Because if you do, you’re a loser.”
Trump delivered these remarks during a visit to Corpus Christi, a key hub for ports and refineries, where he argued that his policies have boosted oil and gas production, lowering costs for American consumers.
“Nobody’s ever seen a one-year turnaround like we had,” Trump said. “We were a laughingstock one and a half years ago, and now we’re hot. We’re hot — I was gonna say like that person in the audience, but I won’t say that, because that could be career-ending.”
