Florida man, reeling from bad breakup, found trapped in the mud — days after vanishing on Valentine’s Day

A Florida man who disappeared on Valentine’s Day following a difficult breakup was found alive Monday after spending days trapped in mud at a sand plant, authorities said.

Andrew Giddens, 36, was discovered partially submerged near a borrow pit at the Vulcan Sand Plant, eight days after his father reported him missing. His family said they last spoke with him on Feb. 14. According to relatives who spoke with WCJB, Giddens had been struggling emotionally after a recent breakup and vanished shortly after speaking with his father.

The search gained momentum Saturday when a deputy recognized Giddens’ abandoned vehicle at the plant. The deputy had previously encountered him during a 2023 trespassing incident at the same location, prompting authorities to launch a large-scale search of the property.

After a two-day effort, deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and plant employees located Giddens stuck shoulder-deep in mud, concealed below grass level. Despite the ordeal, he was conscious and able to communicate with rescuers, though he was too far out for them to reach safely.

Fire crews from Melrose, Palatka, and Putnam County responded and worked for approximately two hours to free him. Initial attempts to pull him out with ropes were unsuccessful, leading crews to use ladders and other equipment to carefully dig him out.

“This rescue shows the power of mutual aid, training, and dedication. We are grateful for the bravery and professionalism of everyone involved,” the Palatka Fire Department said in a statement.

Giddens was transported to a hospital in critical condition after surviving several days without food or water. Authorities said no trespassing charges will be filed, citing consideration for his mental health.

Investigators have not determined why Giddens went onto the property or how he became trapped in the mud.
