A threatening cartel banner was draped across a high school in Tijuana, just south of the U.S. border, days after the killing of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” triggered unrest in the region.
The banner, which appeared Tuesday, voiced support for Oseguera Cervantes. Its message read in English: “Whether they like it or not, they are ready… at Mencho’s command.”
Although no explicit threat targeted the school, administrators canceled classes as a precaution, according to El Financiero. The principal activated emergency protocols through 911, suspending activities to reduce risk. Officials from the state attorney general’s office in Baja California also arrived on campus; requests for comment were not immediately returned.

Authorities located Oseguera Cervantes after intelligence agents tracked a romantic partner to a secluded resort compound. Mexico’s defense secretary, Ricardo Trevilla, said investigators had identified a man close to the woman before the operation.
Surveillance showed she had traveled to Tapalpa, a mountain retreat in Jalisco, where Oseguera and armed associates were hiding. After the woman left, he and his guards remained at the compound.
Mexican special forces raided the site early Sunday. Gunmen opened fire as troops entered, sparking a firefight and pursuit through nearby woodland that left four cartel members dead. Three more were critically wounded and later died while being transported to a hospital in Mexico City, including Oseguera Cervantes.
