One of the most contentious moments of President Trump’s State of the Union address came during his defense of his administration’s aggressive immigration policies. As he spoke, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota shouted, “You’ve killed Americans!”—a reference to the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renée Nicole Good by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

President Trump responded, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, seated beside Omar, then called out, “Shame on you for killing Americans.” The president went on to ask lawmakers to stand if they supported prioritizing U.S. citizens over “illegal aliens,” prompting Republicans to rise while most Democrats remained seated.

Later in the address, when President Trump claimed he had ended eight wars, Tlaib interjected, “It’s a lie,” and added, “What are you talking about?” During remarks about Israel, she also shouted, “It’s a genocide!”

President Trump additionally criticized Minnesota’s Somali community, citing a major fraud case in the state. “The Somali pirates who ransacked Minnesota remind us that there are large parts of the world where bribery, corruption, and lawlessness are the norm, not the exception,” he said. “Importing these cultures through unrestricted immigration and open borders brings those problems right here to the USA.”
