North Korea’s top leader has secured another term in his most powerful role, with state media declaring that “the entire people across the country were moved by endless excitement and exaltation.” Kim Jong Un was reappointed general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, prompting an effusive editorial in Rodong Sinmun that described him as “the greatest person in the world” and credited him with “unimaginable achievements” over the past five years—feats it claimed would have taken others centuries, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The paper also attributed to Kim the attainment of “absolute” top-tier military power and said he personally oversaw three “miracles” in the city of Sinuiju: directing a major flood rescue, rebuilding the damaged area, and completing a modern greenhouse complex, reports Korea JoongAng Daily. Observers note that such extravagant praise highlights how central the leader’s personality cult remains in maintaining control over a country struggling with malnutrition, poverty, and alleged human-rights abuses.

The party congress that renewed Kim’s title—the first since 2021—is expected to outline new five-year targets for the economy and military. As the editorial put it, under Kim’s leadership “our future is infinitely bright and promising.”
