Grisly Kohberger murder scene reveals dark ‘psychosexual’ motive behind killings

Bryan Kohberger was attempting to act out a “psychosexual fantasy” when he killed four University of Idaho students, according to a forensic expert who examined the nature of the victims’ wounds.

Forensic psychologist Gary Brucato said the pattern and severity of the injuries suggest Kohberger, who is serving four life sentences for the 2022 murders, had originally targeted Madison Mogen but ended up committing a mass killing when he encountered others in the home.

“This was a targeted psychosexual fantasy probably aimed at one individual in the house,” Brucato told the Daily Mail. “But his planning failed him. When he got in there, he committed mass murder because he couldn’t control the situation as he expected.”

Brucato, who co-founded Columbia University’s Mass Murder Database, added, “He overestimated himself and underestimated women.” Experts have speculated that Kohberger did not anticipate finding multiple people in the house that night.

Mogen was killed while asleep in her room, but her best friend, Kaylee Goncalves, had stayed over. Xana Kernodle, awake in the middle of the night, was killed on the stairs, and Ethan Chapin, sleeping in a separate room with Kernodle, was also murdered. According to the autopsies, Mogen had fewer stab wounds than the other women, indicating she was likely the original target.

Kohberger entered the Moscow, Idaho, home on November 13, 2022, going directly to the third-floor bedroom where Mogen and Goncalves were sleeping together. Brucato said Kohberger’s plan to fulfill his fantasy was disrupted by unexpected witnesses, which triggered his violent rage.

“You punish the ones who see you, the people who interrupt your fantasy,” Brucato explained.

Autopsy reports show Mogen suffered 28 stab wounds across her head, face, neck, extremities, and chest. Goncalves was stabbed at least 38 times and also had asphyxial and blunt-force injuries. Brucato noted that although Goncalves endured more wounds, Mogen was likely the intended target. He believes Kohberger attacked Mogen first and then “ferociously” assaulted Goncalves when she disrupted his plan.

“That’s why you see so much rage directed at Kaylee. Maddie was the primary target, and Kaylee wasn’t supposed to be there,” Brucato said.

Kohberger then killed Kernodle, stabbing her more than 50 times—the highest among the women—and Chapin, who sustained the fewest stab wounds. Brucato explained that the increasing number of injuries to the women reflects Kohberger’s escalating loss of control:

“Looking at the sequence—Maddie, Kaylee, Xana, and Ethan—the injuries show a rising frenzy for the women. He’s losing control, attacking more intensely as he moves away from the initial murder,” he said.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to all four murders in July and is currently serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
