British police have arrested Peter Mandelson, the UK’s 72‑year‑old former ambassador to the United States, as part of a widening investigation into ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Officers from London’s Metropolitan Police detained him at a Camden address on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in public office and took him to a police station for questioning. Police do not name suspects who have not been charged under UK practice.

The arrest comes after law enforcement executed search warrants at properties linked to Mandelson in London and Wiltshire. Detectives are investigating claims that he shared Downing Street emails and sensitive government information with Epstein more than a decade ago. These enquiries began after millions of pages of documents connected to Epstein were released by the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year.

The case is adding pressure on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer appointed Mandelson as ambassador to Washington in December 2024 even though he was aware of Mandelson’s contact with Epstein after the financier’s 2008 conviction. Starmer dismissed him as ambassador in September 2025 as details of their relationship emerged, and Mandelson later stepped down from both the Labour Party and the House of Lords amid growing political scrutiny.

Mandelson’s arrest follows the detention last week of former Prince Andrew, who was also held on suspicion of misconduct in public office in a separate but related part of the Epstein‑linked probe. Both investigations remain ongoing.
