Border Patrol Agent Shoots Person Near Canadian Border
In a predawn incident near the Canadian border in northern New Hampshire, a Border Patrol agent shot an armed individual early Sunday, authorities said.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott said initial reports indicate the person fired at the agent in Pittsburg, and the agent returned fire. The agent was unharmed. The person who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital, though officials have not yet released their condition, WMUR reported. The encounter occurred around 1 a.m. near the port of entry.
“The FBI Boston Field Office will be investigating the incident. CBP is cooperating fully with investigators,” Scott said, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office is also overseeing the investigation.
An FBI Evidence Response Team processed the scene near Route 3 by the Canadian border crossing, which led to a temporary closure of the highway on Sunday.
Officials have not released names or additional details about what led up to the confrontation. The Associated Press notes that Pittsburg, with a population of about 800 spread across roughly 290 square miles, is the only town in New Hampshire that borders Canada and is typically a quiet crossing point. The town also borders Maine and Vermont.
