U.S. Secret Service agents shot and killed a man early Sunday after he breached the secured perimeter at Mar-a-Lago, authorities said.
The man, who appeared to be carrying a shotgun, was spotted near the resort’s north gate and confronted by Secret Service personnel and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, according to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said officers ordered the man to drop both the shotgun and a gas canister. Instead, Bradshaw said, the man raised the weapon into a firing position, prompting agents to shoot and kill him.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Donald Trump was not at his Florida residence at the time, according to the Secret Service.

Guglielmi said the shooting is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Agents involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome, and officials are withholding the man’s identity until his family is notified.
Trump has faced multiple violent threats in recent years. During the 2024 campaign, a gunman wounded him in the ear in a July assassination attempt, and another armed individual was arrested near Trump’s Florida golf club in September of that year. In separate incidents, Secret Service agents shot an armed man near the White House last April, and authorities arrested a suspect in September accused of aiming a laser at Marine One while Trump was aboard.
“In the middle of the night while most Americans were asleep, the United States Secret Service acted quickly and decisively to neutralize a dangerous individual armed with a gun and a gas canister who intruded on President Trump’s home,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Sunday social media post.
