Cops Rescue Injured Bald Eagle in Hudson River
A bald eagle stranded on a chunk of ice in the Hudson River got a police escort to safety instead of facing a grim fate. New York Police Department harbor officers reported spotting the injured bird Tuesday morning near the George Washington Bridge, “calling out for help” while drifting on broken ice, USA Today reports. Video shows officers from the Harbor Unit looping a line around the eagle, towing the ice toward their boat, and carefully bringing the raptor aboard.
Details on the bird’s age, sex, and injuries were unclear, though one officer noted a bleeding talon. The Harbor Unit transported the eagle to a New Jersey animal sanctuary for treatment, NBC New York reports. A similar rescue occurred the day before in Bradenton, Florida, where officers and wildlife experts saved a roughly 4-year-old male bald eagle with a fractured wing and infection. That eagle, nicknamed “Freedom,” is expected to recover and eventually return to the wild.
