A man in northern Sweden is suspected of exploiting his wife and arranging for at least 120 men to pay for sexual encounters with her, according to the prosecutor overseeing the case, Ida Annerstedt, who spoke to Associated Press on Monday.
The suspect, a man in his 60s, has been in custody since October, when his wife reported the alleged abuse to police. Investigators say they are preparing charges of aggravated procuring, believing he exploited her extensively and systematically. Authorities disclosed Monday, for the first time, the estimated number of men involved. The couple has not been publicly identified, and the husband denies any wrongdoing.
Annerstedt declined to comment on whether coercion or drugging may have occurred. Under Swedish law, purchasing sexual services and facilitating them are crimes, while individuals who sell sex are generally treated as victims of exploitation. A conviction for aggravated procuring carries a potential prison term of two to ten years.
Two men suspected of paying for sex with the woman have already been charged, and prosecutors say additional suspects are likely. They could face up to one year in prison if convicted. Swedish law also criminalizes buying sexual services online, even without physical contact.
Prosecutors plan to file the formal indictment against the husband on March 13, with the trial expected to begin shortly afterward.
