Islamic Prayer Now Heard on the Streets of New York City – 5 Times Daily
The Islamic call to prayer is now blaring on the streets of Manhattan and New York City five times a day.
Residents in several neighborhoods of New York City, including Manhattan, Astoria, and Brooklyn, say they have recently noticed more frequent broadcasts of the Islamic call to prayer (adhan) from local mosques.
Some residents have raised concerns about early-morning noise and the increased use of outdoor loudspeakers. Others say the sound is part of the city’s religious diversity and comparable to church bells or other faith-based observances.

New York began allowing certain houses of worship to broadcast calls to prayer without special permits on Fridays and during Ramadan in 2023 under then-mayor Eric Adams. Current mayor Zohran Mamdani has continued the policy, which permits amplified religious sound within existing noise-code limits.
City officials say religious institutions of all faiths may apply the same rules, provided they comply with time-of-day and decibel regulations. Community responses remain mixed, with some residents filing noise complaints and others expressing support for public religious expression in shared urban spaces.
