Ukrainian refugee and her soldier boyfriend shot dead in bed allegedly by jealous ex. Donald Trump has called for killer to face the death penalty.
A Ukrainian refugee and her soldier boyfriend were fatally shot in their bed on Valentine’s Day in what authorities say was a jealous attack by the woman’s former partner.
Kateryna Tovmash, 21, and Matthew Wade, 28, were killed early Saturday at Tovmash’s home in Woodlake, near Raleigh.
Police allege that Tovmash’s ex-boyfriend, Caleb Fosnaugh, 25, drove roughly 500 miles from Ohio to North Carolina before breaking into the residence. He was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and breaking and entering.
According to Wade’s sister, Megan Wade, Fosnaugh forced one of Tovmash’s younger siblings to wake her before opening fire. He then allegedly shot Wade, who was asleep beside her.

Authorities said Fosnaugh fled in a white 2018 Ford Mustang and was later apprehended by the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office. He is expected to be returned to North Carolina to face prosecution.
“This is a tragic and senseless loss of life,” said Ronnie Fields of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims during this difficult time. We are grateful for the swift coordination and assistance from our law enforcement partners in bringing this individual into custody.”

Another of Wade’s sisters, Courtney Miller, said Tovmash’s family had fled the war in Ukraine and asked for donations to help cover funeral costs.
“Matt was in the Army so his funeral costs will be covered, but his girlfriend’s family will need help for Kate’s funeral,” she wrote, using Tovmash’s nickname. “Please, even if you can’t donate, please share.”
Tovmash’s death follows another high-profile killing of a young Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina. In August 2025, 23-year-old Iryana Zarutska was fatally stabbed while riding a bus in Charlotte. Authorities charged Decarlos Brown Jr., who had multiple prior arrests, in that case.

The attack, which was captured on camera, sparked national outrage. Donald Trump has called for Brown to face the death penalty.
