Hillary Clinton faced criticism from some commentators after inviting Sarah McBride to speak on a panel about women’s rights at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

Clinton arrived in Munich on Thursday to attend the 62nd annual conference. Due to an ongoing Lufthansa strike affecting flights, she traveled to the city by train.

On Saturday, Clinton hosted a session titled “Fundamental Rights for Women.” Among the speakers was McBride, who is the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress. During the discussion, Clinton praised McBride’s advocacy work and her efforts to build support around gender-related issues.

“As a gender-rights champion and also the first openly transgender member of the United States Congress, you’ve been on the front lines of this fight,” Clinton said, noting that McBride has faced threats and organized opposition.

McBride argued that political efforts targeting transgender people are part of broader social conflicts affecting multiple groups. “We are facing a well-organized, well-funded movement that has placed trans people at the center,” she said. McBride added that prejudice against transgender people, women, and sexual minorities is interconnected and rooted in similar biases.

Some critics of the panel objected to McBride’s inclusion in a discussion focused on women’s rights and argued that Clinton did not challenge McBride’s claims. Supporters, however, said the conversation reflected the evolving scope of gender-equality debates.
