Comedian says she’s now ‘uncanceled’ — and that vulgar bloody Trump photo was ahead of its time
Comedian Kathy Griffin said she considers herself “uncanceled” during a recent interview with an affiliate of NPR, WUSF, reflecting on the fallout from a controversial image she posted in 2017 that depicted her holding a bloodied Halloween mask resembling President Donald Trump.
Speaking with WUSF, Griffin discussed the backlash that significantly affected her career at the time and said she believes audiences are now ready to welcome her back to the stage.
After the image was shared, leaders and lawmakers from both major political parties criticized it, saying it appeared to promote violence against an elected official.
“Oh, I think I’m uncanceled, which is a miracle to me, because I didn’t think I would ever be uncanceled,” Griffin said in the interview.
She noted that returning to perform in Tampa feels especially meaningful because of how long it has been since she last appeared there.

Griffin initially issued an apology for the image but later withdrew it, saying she no longer regretted posting it. “People still define me by it. Now, I really own it, and I absolutely lean into it, because I was right, and I was ahead of my time,” she said.
“And so, when I look at that picture now, I’m very proud of it,” she added.
Griffin also remarked that she felt Trump had reacted cautiously to her jokes even before the image was posted, recalling moments when she said he would gesture playfully in anticipation of her humor.
She is scheduled to begin her “New Face, New Tour” show in Orlando, telling WUSF that recent audiences have been highly enthusiastic, sometimes offering standing ovations before she even takes the stage.
