A herd of goats is taking the front line in wildfire prevention in Los Angeles, making their way through dry brush as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to protect neighborhoods from destructive fires.

In Glendale, goats from California Grazing are spending about a week clearing 20 acres of dry brush on the hillsides of Verdugo Park, including areas near homes on Las Flores Drive, NBC4 reported. Each goat can consume roughly 4% of its body weight daily, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to mechanical or chemical brush removal.

Goat grazing is just one part of the Glendale Fire Department’s Vegetation Management Program, which combines machinery, inspections, and community cooperation to reduce wildfire risks.

Thanks to heavy rains this year, the goats arrived early to tackle the fast-growing vegetation. More herds are expected to return as summer temperatures rise, continuing their role in lowering fire hazards.

“This method, known for its eco-friendly nature, offers numerous benefits such as improved access to hard-to-reach areas, reduced noise pollution, avoidance of harmful chemicals, and removal of invasive species while clearing flammable vegetation,” stated a 2024 County of Los Angeles Fire press release. Assistant Fire Chief Drew Smith added, “With proper land management practices, we can help mitigate wildfire risks while preserving the environment and protecting life and property.”

Organizers say every goat remains safe throughout the process.
