White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that a reported 2006 phone call between President Donald Trump and then–Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Reiter challenges long-standing narratives about Trump’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Her remarks came during a White House press briefing following the Department of Justice’s release of a document summarizing a 2019 FBI interview with Reiter. In that interview, Reiter recalled that Trump allegedly told him, “thank goodness you’re stopping him, everyone has known he’s been doing this,” and described Ghislaine Maxwell as “evil,” urging authorities to focus on her. The document also states that Trump told Reiter he had removed Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago club and that he was among the first people to call when he learned investigators were looking into Epstein. Reiter later told the Miami Herald that the call took place in July 2006.

Leavitt said she could not confirm whether the call occurred but argued that, if it did, it aligns with statements Trump has made for years about distancing himself from Epstein.

“Look, it was a phone call that may or may not have happened in 2006. I don’t know the answer to that question. What I’m telling you is that what President Trump has always said is that he kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club because Jeffrey Epstein was a creep,” Leavitt said.

She added, “And that remains true, and this call, if it did happen, corroborates exactly what President Trump has said from the beginning.”

Leavitt also suggested that the FBI document may prompt reporters to reassess previous assumptions about the nature of Trump’s relationship with Epstein.

“And I’m sure many of you, when you read that alleged FBI report, probably thought to yourself, ‘Wow, this really cracks our narrative that we’ve been trying to push about this president for many years.’ So we’re moving on from that,” she said.
