Passengers on a Somali flight found themselves in the Indian Ocean after a dramatic runway overshoot—but remarkably, everyone walked away unharmed.

A Starsky Airlines Fokker 50 carrying 50 passengers and five crew members reported a technical issue shortly after departing Mogadishu on Tuesday and returned to the city’s airport, according to Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority. Although the plane made it back to the runway, it was unable to stop in time. The aircraft overshot the runway and came to rest in shallow water along the shoreline near the airport.

Photos shared on X showed passengers calmly climbing out of the plane and walking away from the scene. Officials confirmed there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

The African Union mission said United Nations and AU troops were dispatched quickly to assist with rescue efforts, and Somalia’s transport minister visited the site soon after the incident. Starsky Airlines expressed relief that everyone on board was safe and said it is investigating the cause of the emergency landing.

“The pilot’s swift and calm decision-making played a decisive role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board, and we commend him for how he handled the situation,” said airline spokesman Hassan Mohamed Aden.

According to FlightGlobal, the aircraft—built in 1990 and acquired by Starsky in 2023—sustained significant damage, including a fractured right wing.
