A judge set a June 8 trial date Friday for Luigi Mangione on his state charges, and he appeared visibly upset by the decision. The date comes three months before his federal trial is scheduled to begin and earlier than his defense team had requested, according to CBS News.

As deputies escorted the 27-year-old from the courtroom in handcuffs, he loudly objected. “It’s the same trial twice,” Mangione said, according to WPIX. “One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition.”

State prosecutors had pushed for the earlier start date, while Mangione’s attorneys argued it was too soon. Defense lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo told Judge Gregory Carro that her client was being placed “in an untenable situation,” describing the scheduling conflict as “a tug-of-war between two different prosecution offices.” When she added, “The defense will not be ready on June 8,” Carro replied, “Be ready.”

Mangione faces charges in both state and federal court in connection with the 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel. He has pleaded not guilty.

The timeline could still shift. Judge Carro noted that it appears federal authorities may have moved away from an earlier understanding that the state case would proceed first, with jury selection in the federal case currently set for Sept. 8. If the federal trial is postponed until later in the year or into next year, Carro said the state trial could be delayed until September.
