Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the keynote speaker at a town hall in Queens, New York, on Thursday, where she announced plans to help organize training sessions for residents to monitor and document ICE activity amid ongoing immigration enforcement efforts.
During the event, AOC said she voted against the $1.2 trillion government funding bill, which includes two weeks of funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
“I did not vote for this. I voted no,” AOC said, urging her constituents to keep watch over ICE operations in their neighborhoods. She also outlined plans to train so-called “legal observers”—community members who can document enforcement activities without breaking the law.
“Knowing things you can do legally to observe… to film, to take notes without being deemed as impeding law enforcement,” she explained.
AOC highlighted upcoming “teach-ins” with the activist group Hands Off NYC, aimed at training community members in these legal observation techniques.
She also referenced the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot during encounters with ICE agents, calling the incidents “murders.” Renee Good was shot after attempting to run over an ICE agent in Minneapolis, while Alex Pretti, who was armed, was killed while resisting arrest during an immigration operation.
“We are seeing an escalation of ICE violence across the United States,” AOC said, criticizing the Trump Administration’s immigration policies.
AOC credited community organizers and advocates with helping prevent ICE from carrying out some arrests and deportations.
The Department of Homeland Security, however, has reported a surge in threats against ICE agents. “Our law enforcement officers are now facing an 8,000% increase in death threats against them and a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against them while they put their lives on the line to remove murderers, pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and terrorists from American neighborhoods,” DHS said.
The department also released a threatening voicemail left for an ICE officer in Minnesota on January 24.
