Ellen DeGeneres buys $27M California mansion months after freakout over Trump, move to UK
Ellen DeGeneres has reportedly purchased a $27 million mansion in Montecito, California — just 14 months after she relocated to the UK, citing President Trump’s return to office as the reason for her move.
An insider told People that DeGeneres isn’t planning a permanent move back to the U.S., but will instead divide her time between Montecito and the United Kingdom.
“She’s not moving back to the U.S. but will continue to split her time between both the UK and Montecito,” the source said.
In June 2024, the comedian bought a $14 million farmhouse in the Cotswolds, about 100 miles northwest of London, several months after President Trump began his second term. She later upgraded to a glass-walled mansion in the same area to accommodate her wife Portia de Rossi’s horses.
Despite her earlier public statements about leaving the U.S., a real estate source told People that the 68-year-old TV host and her wife have been missing “the California weather and horse scene.”

“Portia loves polo and her horses,” the source added.
DeGeneres was seen house-hunting in Montecito late last month, coinciding with the “no work, no school, no shopping” protest against ICE. Locals in the Cotswolds told People they hadn’t seen her in months, although another source noted she had been spotted in the village during the summer.
Back in July 2025, DeGeneres confirmed that her move to the UK was motivated by President Trump’s election. Speaking at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre, she recalled, “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ … And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’ ”
At the time, she described life in England as “absolutely beautiful.” Known for her love of real estate, DeGeneres has tried to sell her original UK farmhouse for $30 million, though the property has not yet sold. Recent reports suggest it may be close to selling after several price reductions.
DeGeneres has continued to speak out on political issues. Last month, she apologized for the ICE surge in Minneapolis, saying in a video, “I just wanted to say I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis and our country, really, but specifically Minneapolis right now. Because it’s where I shot my last stand-up special, and everybody there couldn’t have been more lovely.”
