Paul McCartney’s One-Pot Soup Recipe Is So Easy, It Was Put in a Song
Paul McCartney’s Soup Recipe Makes a Cameo on The Simpsons
In the Season 7 episode Lisa the Vegetarian, Paul and Linda McCartney made a memorable cameo to support Lisa Simpson’s choice to stop eating meat. According to The Beatles Story blog, the McCartneys agreed to appear on the show only if Lisa stayed vegetarian for the rest of the series—a rule that has held for nearly thirty years.
But the real magic came in a line that quietly blended food and music history:
“Linda and I both feel strongly about animal rights. In fact, if you play ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ backwards, you’ll hear a recipe for a really ripping lentil soup!” Paul said.
While the claim isn’t literally true, Paul fully embraced the gag. He recorded himself reading a simple lentil soup recipe—Linda’s own—and it was dubbed over a reversed version of Maybe I’m Amazed to play during the episode’s end credits.

Paul McCartney’s Lentil Soup Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 cup carrots, chopped
- 2 celery sticks, chopped
- ½ cup lentils
- 1 bay leaf
- 2¼ cups vegetable stock or water
- Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon freshly chopped parsley
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a large stock pot and add the onion, garlic, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened.
- Add the lentils, bay leaf, and vegetable stock, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are tender, about 15–20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, stir in the parsley, and remove the bay leaf before serving.
Sir Paul’s tastes may have changed over the years, but his humor and heart clearly haven’t. All the while, he’s still finding ways to inspire people—through music and even through lentil soup.
