Alabama man inexplicably survives being crushed by garbage truck while sleeping in dumpster: ‘That was a God thing’
A homeless man in Alabama miraculously survived after falling asleep in a dumpster and being inadvertently caught in a garbage truck.
The incident occurred in Jackson early Wednesday morning, when a garbage truck driver was completing his regular route. The man, seeking warmth from the frigid temperatures in the low 20s, had dozed off inside the dumpster.
Jackson Fire Chief John Brown told WKRG that the call from the panicked truck driver was unlike anything he had seen in his 40-year career. The driver only realized something was wrong when he pulled into a Popeyes drive-thru and heard the man’s screams coming from the compactor. By that time, the man had already been compressed twice.

“It’s really fortunate that the gates at the Popeyes were closed and the driver had to step out. That’s when he heard the man in the back needing help and immediately shut everything down,” Brown said.
Volunteer firefighter Mendy Boldin described the rescue as miraculous. “We were all bracing for the worst, thinking we’d need to provide major trauma assistance, but he was mostly unharmed,” Boldin said. “That was a God thing.”
The man was taken to a Mobile hospital, about an hour south of Jackson, for treatment.
This incident comes amid a worsening homeless crisis in the U.S., intensified by severe winter weather. In New York City alone, 16 people have died from freezing temperatures since January 19.
