An 18-year-old wearing a ski mask apologized to a woman as he pointed a gun at her and stole her SUV, telling her he needed the vehicle to visit his grandmother, according to authorities in Orange County, Florida.
Deputies say Kenneth Shears approached the woman Saturday while she was sitting in her parked vehicle and talking on her phone. The victim, who spoke with FOX35 Orlando on the condition of anonymity, said she initially believed the encounter might be a prank.
According to the arrest report, Shears told the woman, “I am sorry to be doing this, but I need to see my grandmother.” The woman said she attempted to talk him out of taking the vehicle for several minutes and even offered to give him a ride, but he refused.
Shears drove off in the SUV, reportedly promising to return it. A brief police pursuit followed, ending when the stolen vehicle crashed into a parked car on a front lawn, causing significant damage to both vehicles, deputies said.
Shears was taken into custody and is being held at the Orange County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including carjacking with a firearm.
