California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Trump administration clashed this week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as Newsom criticized global leaders for what he described as deference to President Donald Trump — only to face backlash himself for appearing alongside billionaire activist Alexander Soros.

Newsom attended the annual gathering and told reporters that foreign leaders were “rolling over” when dealing with President Trump, at one point remarking that he “should have brought a bunch of kneepads” for world leaders attending the conference. His comments quickly drew attention, especially after a photo surfaced showing Newsom standing with Alexander Soros, the son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sharply criticized Newsom during a Wednesday press conference at the USA House in Davos, accusing the California governor of hypocrisy.

“Governor Newsom, who strikes me as Patrick Bateman meets Sparkle Beach Ken, may be the only Californian who knows less about economics than Kamala Harris,” Bessent said. “He’s here this week with his billionaire sugar daddy, Alex Soros. Davos is the perfect place for a man who, while everyone else was on lockdown and people were being arrested for going to church, was enjoying $1,000-a-night dinners at the French Laundry.”

“And I’m sure the people of California won’t forget that,” Bessent added.

The criticism intensified after Soros posted a photo of himself with Newsom at the forum, praising the governor for publicly challenging leaders who, in Soros’ view, were appeasing the Trump administration.

“Great catching up with the real star of the 2026 World Economic Forum, my friend Gavin Newsom,” Soros wrote. “So glad he’s here calling out world leaders for believing appeasement works when it comes to Trump. It doesn’t.”

The post went viral, prompting mockery from critics across social media. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, shared an AI-generated parody of the photo depicting Newsom in a NASCAR-style racing suit covered with “Soros” and “CCP” sponsorship logos.

“Fixed it for you,” Cruz wrote.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers also weighed in, saying, “Gavin Newscum auditioning to be Alex Soros’ next sugar baby is a waste of time — all the money in the world could not make Newscum’s pitiful presidential dreams come true.”

Others joined the criticism, including political commentators and former military officials, who argued the image symbolized Newsom’s alignment with globalist elites. Some mocked the optics of Newsom’s appearance at Davos, while others questioned his priorities as governor.

Meanwhile, Newsom claimed the Trump administration blocked him from speaking at the USA House during the conference. The White House declined to confirm or deny the allegation.

“No one in Davos knows who third-rate governor Newscum is or why he is frolicking around Switzerland instead of fixing the many problems he created in California,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said.

Alexander Soros has previously supported Newsom’s political career, donating roughly $70,000 and frequently praising him on social media. The two have appeared together at multiple high-profile events, including the Clinton Global Initiative and climate summits over the past several years.

Fox News Digital reached out to Newsom’s office for comment but did not receive a response.
