Trump says Greenland framework with NATO involves mineral rights for U.S.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a framework he reached with NATO regarding Greenland includes access to mineral rights for the United States and its European allies, along with cooperation on the Golden Dome defense initiative.
“They’re going to be involved in the Golden Dome, and they’re going to be involved in mineral rights, and so are we,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC’s Joe Kernen at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
When asked how long the agreement would last, Trump replied, “Forever.”
Earlier Wednesday, the president ruled out using force to acquire Greenland and called for immediate negotiations over the island’s status during his address to the World Economic Forum.
Shortly afterward, Trump said he had reached a framework agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He also said the United States would not impose tariffs on Denmark or other European countries on Feb. 1.
Speaking to CNBC, Trump described the arrangement as a “concept of a deal” with NATO, declining to provide additional details and noting that the framework is complex.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Greenland ranks eighth globally in rare earth reserves. Trump has made the development of a domestic and allied rare earth supply chain a central goal of his administration’s industrial policy, aiming to reduce U.S. reliance on China.
Rare earth elements are used to produce magnets that are critical components in weapons systems, electric vehicles, electronics, and other key industries.
Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, has raised concerns among some observers that the effort could strain or fracture the NATO alliance.
