A 37-year-old Indiana woman has been arrested after police say she attempted to kill a 1-year-old child during an incident inside an Indianapolis home.
Kendra Lee Proctor was taken into custody Sunday and charged with attempted murder and child molestation involving a victim under the age of 14, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a possible child abuse incident at a residence in the 3500 block of Baltimore Avenue around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, according to WXIN. When officers arrived, they encountered Proctor, another adult woman, and the toddler.
The adult witness told police she discovered Proctor sitting on the child’s face while the child was crying and in distress. The witness said she had left the room briefly after the two finished watching a religious-themed movie. When she returned to check on the toddler, she found Proctor on top of the child and immediately intervened.
Emergency responders examined the child at the scene and determined the child was not physically injured.
According to police reports, the witness told investigators that Proctor had been behaving erratically prior to the incident, asking strange questions about the movie they had watched. After being confronted, Proctor allegedly made statements suggesting she believed her actions were expected of her.
Investigators said the witness also reported that Proctor may have attempted to sexually assault the child and later tried to place her hand over the witness’s mouth, stating she intended to “sacrifice” her as well.
During a post-Miranda interview, Proctor allegedly admitted she attempted to kill the child, telling police she believed doing so would result in the witness killing her. Authorities noted that Proctor was unable to clearly explain her actions and appeared disoriented during questioning. Investigators also indicated Proctor may suffer from schizophrenia.
Proctor was booked into the Marion County Jail and remained held without bond as of Wednesday morning.
