Red baseball caps parodying President Trump’s iconic MAGA hats have become a visible symbol of Danish and Greenlandic resistance to the U.S. president’s stated interest in taking control of the Arctic territory. The caps, emblazoned with the slogan “Make America Go Away,” play off Trump’s “Make America Great Again” message and have spread widely on social media and at public demonstrations.

The hats were on display over the weekend at a protest in Copenhagen, where demonstrators gathered in freezing temperatures. While European governments have voiced firm diplomatic support for Denmark—warning that threats toward Greenland could weaken Western security and Arctic stability—protesters on the ground have taken a more direct and mocking approach.

“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said 76-year-old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore one of the red caps at Saturday’s rally.

According to the Associated Press, the spoof hats were created by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, a 58-year-old owner of a vintage clothing store in Copenhagen. Tonnesen said concern grew after a U.S. delegation visited Greenland. “We started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke—it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” he said. “I thought, what can I do? Can I communicate something serious in a funny way and bring Danes together to show support for the people of Greenland?”

What began as modest interest quickly turned into a surge in demand, with the hats selling out in a single weekend. The first design featured a Danish wordplay: “Nu det NUUK!”—a twist on the phrase “Nu det nok” (“Now it’s enough”), substituting the name of Greenland’s capital.

At the demonstration, protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried handmade signs rejecting U.S. claims over the territory. Messages included “No Means No” and “Make America Smart Again,” underscoring the sharp tone of public opposition.
