Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, announced Tuesday that they are expecting a son later this summer. The couple shared the news in a social media post, saying their fourth child is due in late July.

The baby will join their three other children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. Vance, 41, and Usha Vance, 40, said both mother and baby are healthy. In their statement, they expressed gratitude to the military medical team that cares for their family and to staff members who support them as they balance public service with raising young children.

The announcement comes as the Republican vice president has long promoted the idea of growing American families. Since launching his political career with a successful run for the U.S. Senate in Ohio in 2021, Vance has frequently voiced concern about declining birth rates. He has continued that message as vice president, including during a March 2025 speech at the March for Life, where he said he wants to see more children born in the United States.

Usha Vance and the couple’s children often accompany the vice president on official travel, including overseas trips, with the children sometimes boarding Air Force Two in pajamas for overnight flights.

Historically, it has been rare for top U.S. leaders to welcome children while in office. One notable exception was President Grover Cleveland, whose wife, Frances Cleveland, gave birth during his second term in 1893. According to the BBC, Usha Vance will be the first second lady to give birth while her husband serves in office.
