Ford employee TJ Sabula, who drew national attention this week, has asked that two GoFundMe fundraisers created in his name stop accepting donations, saying he has received enough financial support. According to the Detroit Free Press, the two campaigns—both verified by GoFundMe—had raised a combined total of about $810,000.
On one fundraiser page, a person identifying himself as Sabula thanked supporters, announced the drive was closing, and encouraged donors to support other causes and organizations. A similar message appeared on the second page, which had been organized by a friend.
Sabula was suspended with pay while Ford investigates an incident that occurred during President Trump’s visit to the Dearborn Truck Plant. During the tour, Sabula allegedly shouted an accusation at the president. Trump responded with an obscene gesture and mouthed a profane remark. The brief exchange, lasting only a few seconds, quickly became a national political flashpoint.
Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Detroit praised Sabula on social media, calling him a “national hero,” while Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the worker was within his rights to express his views.
The United Auto Workers union said it would ensure Sabula receives full protection under his contract and emphasized that workers should never be subjected to vulgar language or behavior from anyone, including the president. Ford leadership has attempted to shift attention back to the overall visit. Executive Chair Bill Ford described the incident as “unfortunate” but noted it represented only a few seconds of a much longer tour, adding that the vast majority of employee interactions were positive.
Sabula later told The Washington Post that he had no regrets about what he said.
