Tensions around the world feel higher than they have in years. The United States recently carried out a major military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken into U.S. custody and flown out of the country – a dramatic move that many see as a stunning escalation in U.S.–Venezuela relations. At the same time, there are ongoing disputes such as past U.S. interest in Greenland, serious friction between Russia and Ukraine over Russia’s invasion that continues with heavy fighting, and China’s insistence that Taiwan is part of its territory, which raises fears of a possible larger conflict. There are also major regional wars and dangerous tensions involving Iran’s activities in the Middle East and instability tied to Cuba and other regions, and reports that the U.S. “doomsday plane” was observed for the first time in over 50 years -all adding to a sense that global instability is rising.
