Body-camera footage released this week shows the moments leading up to an ICE agent shooting a Minneapolis activist during a law enforcement operation, an incident authorities say was an act of self-defense.
The video shows an ICE officer exiting his vehicle and approaching a maroon SUV that was positioned to block a roadway while agents were conducting an operation. According to officials, the vehicle was interfering with the officers’ ability to proceed safely.
The driver, identified as Renee Good, remains inside the SUV while speaking to the agent. A passenger, identified as Rebecca Good, is also heard addressing the officer. The agent does not respond verbally and appears to remain calm throughout the exchange.
At one point, another ICE agent can be heard ordering the driver to exit the vehicle. The footage then shows the SUV reversing while its wheels turn, redirecting the vehicle toward the agent who is walking nearby.
Within seconds, the SUV accelerates forward and strikes the ICE agent. Immediately afterward, the agent fires his weapon, striking the driver.
Officials say the agent discharged his firearm because he believed his life was in imminent danger. Law enforcement authorities describe the vehicle as a potentially deadly weapon under the circumstances.
Video footage appears to show the driver looking in the direction of the agent as the vehicle accelerates.
Federal authorities state that the shooting is being reviewed under standard procedures. Several media outlets and public figures have criticized the incident, while others argue the video supports the agent’s claim of self-defense.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet announced whether further action will be taken, but officials say the investigation is ongoing.
