RIVERSIDE, Ohio — A 26-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after fatally shooting her housemate in the head during an argument at their western Ohio home.
Halle Harvey admitted to killing 30-year-old Shyanne Mitchell, according to court records obtained by Law&Crime. Under a plea agreement, other charges, including murder and assault, were dropped.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 17, 2025, at a home on the 4700 block of Opperman Avenue in Riverside, a suburb of Dayton. Both women lived at the residence with their boyfriends, Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said.
Authorities said the confrontation began in the basement, though the exact cause of the argument remains unclear. Harvey reportedly went upstairs, retrieved a 9 mm handgun, and returned to the basement, where the argument escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, Harvey fired the gun, striking Mitchell in the head.
Police arrived at the scene around 3 p.m. and found Harvey walking outside with her hands raised. She had scratches on her face and chest, the Riverside police report cited by the Dayton Daily News noted. Harvey reportedly expressed shock over the shooting and told officers she had not intended to kill Mitchell. She also asked the responding officer if she would be imprisoned for life and if she could use her vape, according to the report.
Harvey is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 26.
Mitchell’s obituary describes her as “a radiant spirit whose life was marked by love, laughter, and creativity.” She was a mother and “truly one of a kind, touching the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
